If you have been coming to Sly Park as a regular, it would not surprise you that it rained and hailed during the middle of June. We had the campground available an extra day for people that want more time in the wild. Only two people were brave enough to come early. Jim Kahlert and Bill Peterson…but he brought his Airstream trailer with electricity, forced air heating, satellite TV and an awning that covered half of the camp area. What a way to enjoy nature. His two dogs, Duke and Jack did not seem to mind. Friday was a little better. The sun tried to pop out between the rain clouds. It was not the typical day for swimming or water skiing. We now have two residents of the area, Tom Biro and Tom Kenny. They each elected to stay at home during the evening but joined us during the day. T. Biro supplied us with so much firewood that we had a fire for two days non-stop. It was nice to warm up even during the day. The Shattucs did not even bother putting up a tent. They stayed in their truck. Pete and Beth Weston tried out their new tent and air mattress. Sandy Green elected to stay with the Biros. Darold brought his camper and was quickly joined by his grand daughter Amanda. The rest of the Willetts put up a tent that was for summer camping only and got a little damp. Roger and Elisa tried out their new camping trailer and their dog Ruby thought it was quite nice. Greg Kahlert even showed up with a ski boat and actually did get on the water. The Saturday evening BBQ turned out great. The rain had finally disappeared and the coals were glowing for our main meal. Joe and Lynn Pettrow from Colorado, their two grand sons and three friends of Joe joined us. They had big trailers and elected to stay at the resident KOA. Joe Pettrow was one of the founders of the club and its first president. His philosophy to life is “If you are not having fun, then you are not doing it right”. Ryan and Amanda Willett were the only ones to catch any fish. Ryan got to grill his big trout and after eating it said ‘It tastes like chicken”. The evening was highlighted by our raffle of the Mossberg shotgun with three barrels. The winner and completely surprised was Bill Shattuc. His brother Dan had bought his tickets and Bill did not know he was even entered. Tom Biro had donated a case of wine for runner-up prizes, which was given away a bottle at a time. The winners that were not there were P. Celentano, Larry Waggoner and Rocky Ferraro. So come to the next meeting and pick up your prize. There was a wine tasting event spearheaded by Roger Hatin with his friend and winemaker, Mike and Peggy. Roger tells this sideways trip in this issue. The rest is a collage of photos put together without titles but you should recognize the players and see how they made lemonade out of this lemon of a weekend. Sly Park Pictures |
