At the last meeting, Jim Robinson said he caught some nice trout at Lake Del Valle near Livermore but claimed it was a secret spot. Last week he shared this sport with Darold Givens and Don Woods. We arrived at 7 AM after a heart stopping boat inspection at the entrance. You never know how the inspection will go as even dew settling in the boat overnight will cancel a trip. We arrived at the spot and removed our gear that consisted of pole spikes, lawn chairs, cooler and two fishing rods apiece. Don only had one, as he did not get a 2-rod stamp. Jim started out with a nice size trout that happened to be the biggest of the day, a bright 18 in. rainbow. He and Darold followed suit while Don struggled a bit. Soon he was pulling in some fish. It rained pretty hard that morning but it didn’t stop the fish from biting. We had limits by 11AM but Jim complained that the fish were smaller than what he had caught earlier. His bait consisted of a sliding sinker with an 18in. leader and size 4 or 6 hook baited with Berkeley power eggs in white and add a bottled scent. Darold make a cocktail by adding a yellow egg to 2 white eggs.
The next day Jim and Darold returned and only caught 4 at the spot so started trolling. It was slow but Jim did catch a fish on a kastmaster and another one on a white grub trolling top water. They went home with six fish total.
