GOOD TURKEY SEASON
By Darold Givens
Last turkey season our usual group of hunters who lease private land in Red Bluff were
zero in the takedown of turkeys. This year is a whole different ballgame. On opening
weekend, 7 hunters got 5 birds and I got two of them. They were not of the gigantic size
but after last year, I was grateful for even a look at a gobbler, let alone get two on the
opening weekend. That same weekend, Mitch Hoppe, Ken Bertelsen and Roger Hatin
each got a bird.

The next weekend the weather was predicted to be bad over Easter but Rob Willett and I
had a great time in the woods and saw lots of birds and even had a chance at a tom but
passed it up for a better opportunity. This past week Roger and I heard rain all night and
got up to a wet and dreary day but headed out anyway. We set up where he and I had
each killed a turkey only to hear them gobble across the way. We did hear one tom close
by so waited. We each used our calls but I could not hear any answer but Roger could.
Soon a tom walked out in front of me and I had my opportunity at 30yds and took it. Bird #
3. Roger left to seek out the other toms we heard on the other side and I returned to the
truck. The birds did not respond and it started to rain so we left.
There is still half a season left so I am putting out my guide sign,
