Waterloo “Stockton Trap & Skeet, Inc.” –

Our last event was held on Wednesday, October 21st at the Waterloo range in Stockton. We
usually have a crew of several regulars but this time we also had a newcomer to the event,
Ken Bertelsen who joined us this day. Some of our regular crew had conflicts this month but
we did have a great team that made it of Darold Givens, Ken Bertelsen, Bill Shattuc, Wil
Petersen and Tom Kenny. The weather for this day was in the cool 70s a far cry from our
summer heat in the 90 & 100-degree range. Ken expressed that he was surprised at how
nice the facility was and not only did he enjoy the facility he did well at skeet shooting and
ended up as our best shooter of the day. Sometimes when you expect to be humbled by that
little clay target, it can end up surprising you as to how many times you CAN hit it. With the
more experienced skeet-range shooters sharing tips, pointers and techniques, the first round
resulted in a pretty good score for all the shooters. However, on the next round, Darold’s
brilliant idea of keeping a real “written-down” score resulted in that second round being one
of the worst of the year for some of the shooters except Ken who had newcomer’s good luck
or better nerves?? Tom K on the other hand maybe hit half in that round…..so then when
that ordeal was over, we broke for lunch and enjoyed Tom Kenny’s BBQed tri-tip sandwiches
with onions & peppers served with cucumber salad made with Jim Kahlert’s recipe and
Suzanne’s homemade cookies for desert.  After some story telling and solving some world
problems we again shot one more round, WITHOUT Darold’s help in keeping a written score
and ended the day with a good hunting skill practice and overall good shoot had by all.

The informal nature of this event brings some of our folks together and we always enjoy
sharpening our shooting skills and of course we have time for stories. Each month we have a
variety of shooters and we have a volunteer or we will rotate the person who brings the
lunch. Most bring their own drinks and some to share and our lunches vary from BBQ to
shrimp cocktails, to turkey, to elk steak sandwiches with all the trimmings. We primarily shoot
skeet at these events but Stockton also has five-stand shooting, original trap shooting and
added this summer, a sporting clay range. Interesting to note that the first overall medal won
at the ’08 Olympics was by a young woman skeet shooter at the Bejing Games, a bronze
medal. She has trained and continues to train at Waterloo, as do many other high-level
competition shooters, including our own Larry Wagoner. That adds something special to
being able to shoot at this facility.

So, if you are interested in our next shoot, that day is typically planned for the third
Wednesday of each month and an email is sent out to those that usually come. Sometimes
we have moved the shoot date to accommodate more shooters, depending on our email
response. If you would like to come to the next event let Darold or Tom Kenny know and we
will put you on the email list. The next shoot is planned for Wednesday, November 18th at 10:
00 AM in the morning and ends around 2:00 PM.  Keep your powder dry and come shoot
with us!!
