Montana Whitetail and Bull Elk Combo Hunt
By Joe Miller

My Montana hunt went something like this; we did an 8 day guided wilderness hunt, in the Madison Mountains of Montana which
is in south west. The first and last days of the trip were travel days on horse back, 14 miles in the back country. The country was
heavily wooded, lots of blow down, and the woods would give way to large open meadows. The weather was a little of every
thing snow, rain, wind, and sunny at times. The accommodations were large 12x14 outfitter tents with 2 hunters per tent and a
wood stove, cots, and lantern; Basic but very comfortable.

We had 6 hunters in camp that week and out of 6 hunters we killed 3 bull elk that were 300", 260", and a rag horn. I also shot a
whitetail. The elk were not as plentifully as we hoped, so the people who got elk were very lucky! The deer hunting was a little
better. Everybody saw bucks but mostly does and small bucks; a few big bucks were seen, but nobody could get a shot at the
big ones. I personally saw about 25 mule deer and a few okay bucks and I also saw about 30 whitetails and one was a real
monster. I didn't get a shot at the monster, but the next day I was able to connect with a decent buck. This was my first out of
state hunt, long over due, but well worth it. I don't think I will do the same hunt again, but other out of state hunts are on the
horizon for me.
