Fishing Report I: Darold and Don Woods fished Lake Del Valle for trout and caught
some nice ones. They used black tailed rooster tails and silver Apex lures. The
depth trolled was 13-28 feet deep at about 1.5 mph.
Check Fishsniffer website for more current information on how to fish Lake Del Valle.
Note: When bringing a boat to Del Valle, make sure there is no water anywhere in
the boat and motor. Keep plug out of boat, now standing water in any of the holds,
holding tank or cooler. Tilt motor so no water remains in the motor. Even a few drops
of water will keep your boat out of the water. This is an inspection in the parking lot
of the lake that is conducted by the park staff to combat against the invasive
mussels.

Fishing Report II: Rocky took a trip up to Pyramid Lake which is just about 30
minutes north of Reno. Pyramid Lake is a phenomenal Cutthroat Trout fishery. I
drove up one Saturday at the end of April. I had always heard about how good the
fishing was there but something always came up and I was not able to go. This year I
was planning it for weeks ahead of time. I tied several different flies just for this trip.
They were mostly of the woolly worm variety but in different colors. The lake is sort
of a high desert lake. There are several boat ramps but the fish are in close so you
can cast to them from shore.
You can camp or bring a trailer right on the beach where you fish. You can actually
build a fire and come in to warm up every once in a while. The people I met up at the
lake stayed at the Crosby Lodge which is not really a lodge but a motel with a gas
station, store, bar, casino and dinner. I bought my fishing license there for about
nine dollars.
I wore waders and layered up. The water is cold and so is the air temp. I was able to
borrow a step stool so that I could bring it out to where I was wading and get out of
the water for a while. It helped tremendously and kept me fishing for hours. The best
fishing is from March to May depending on the water temp. I saw a lot of large fish
being caught. Mike, Dave and John all caught multiple Cutts. The key was they were
using a sinking line. You do not have to fly fish. I saw plenty of fish being caught with
a spin casting rod. I got a few bites and lost a big one that was only about 5 feet
away when he got off. We should plan a club fishing trip here next year. I think it
would be a fun weekend.

Info on Pat Stratford: Darold contacted John Stratford, Pat’s brother and found out
that Pat is suffering from dementia and was placed in a home near his brother’s
home in Alabama. Darold will be sending the newsletter to Pat as Pat has some
recognition of certain persons and places. This may help him remember some of his
friends from the club. Darold has the address if anyone wants direct contact to Pat
or his brother.
