DelValle Fishing Derby Weekend
By Darold Givens

Our 2nd annual club fishing derby was again a fun time for all that attended. It was just a
shame that more club members couldn’t be there. Our regular camping crew arrived
Friday night and set up camp. Don Woods and wife Marge brought their 23ft trailer and
Harold Whitmore and wife Caroline had their luxury motor home while little ol me had my
7ft camper. It was at least better than sleeping in the back of the truck like Bill Shattuc.
We were joined later at 5:30 in the morning by Bill Kruger.

We headed for the boat ramp at 6:30 Saturday. My boat had already been inspected so I
did not have any trouble. Bob was there early and passed inspection easily. Joe O Brien
brought is nice fishing boat and was almost through inspection when they asked him to
lower his motor to vertical. Six drops of water leaked from his motor and his boat was
turned down. With much disgust, Joe went home. That meant we were down to two
boats, Harold and Bob in his and Bill, Don and I in mine. Since Bob beat me out last
year, the challenge was on. Bob and Harold had 3 trout before we even put a fish in the
boat. Later we got two and the derby was over. At the cleaning station we measured the
fish and Bob was 1st and Harold was 2nd with trout almost 17 in. long.

That evening we had our BBQ with great salads, chicken thighs and thick juicy
hamburgers served with some great wine. Since we had extra vehicles parked in our
site, Bob got a wake-up call from the Ranger to move his boat and truck. The next day we
all fished for fun. I had my boat in the water when I saw Bob launch his boat with Bill.
Soon afterwards, Bob was taking his boat out. What happened I asked? I left the plug out
was the answer. The fishing was slower but at least I caught a fish that would have been
a winner. At the dock, Bill decided to take a swim. Seems that the boat went one way and
Bill the other while trying to exit the boat. We returned to the campsite where Harold fixed
fried trout for the group. It was a fun weekend but just too short. Next year I hope more
will attend.
