Bay Halibut Fishing on the Lisa Anne
By Darold Givens

I had heard that fishing the SF Bay was for halibut fishing this time of year. Ken had gone
out several times and did quite well with halibut and striped bass. This was my first time
this season and I was joined by my hunting buddies, Eric Swanson and Jim Danse as
well as our last club guest, Ed Gan. We fished several spots after leaving Oyster Pt.
Harbor. Our goal was to be at certain hot spots while the tide was just right. Our first
catch was small sand shark but we did not know this and everyone gets excited until it
was viewed. This little creature managed to tangle several lines before we were able to
undo the mess and continue fishing. The next move was more productive. Ken had a
good bite and managed to bring on board a keeper halibut. This was along Crissy Field
near the St. Francis Yacht Club. The second fish was a little larger, caught in the same
area. In the mean time, Fish and Game boarded us. Two officers approached in an 18ft
rubber raft and one of them, a perky young lady officer stepped on board and asked if we
had any luck. We showed her the two halibut and she was satisfied with that. She
checked all our licenses and stamps and was in a good mood. We joked with her and
she went along quite graciously. I waved to her partner and said he could leave, she was
staying with us. Who wouldn’t want to trade a rubber raft for a 41ft Tiara? I think we made
her day and no citations were issued. We continued fishing and got a 21in striper that
was a bonus. We called it a day and a good time was had by all.
