| COLLINS LAKE TROUT Bob Kruger June 13 – 16 I took my family to Collins Lake, about 30 miles east of Marrysville, CA. We had a cabin rented and met up with another family who had their motor home there. This was my first trip to the lake after hearing many stories about the good trout fishing at Collins. There is one concessionaire at the lake who operated all the camping, boat launch, rental cabins, small store, etc. We found the place immaculate. They offer mostly motor home or fifth wheel sites with full hookups. The area is regularly patrolled and they have frequent cleaning crews out collecting garbage. The staff is mostly local teenagers who we found were all very courteous and helpful. The first morning my friend Dan and I took my ski boat out fishing. We stopped a few places and bait fished with powerbait. Dan caught one trout about 14”-15”. We wakeboarded in mid day and made plans for fishing the next morning. Someone at the dock suggested we go straight across the lake, find 30’ water depth and “there’s fish all over”. The next morning Dan, his wife Liz and I shot across the lake and dropped our powerbait to the bottom. In about 1 hour we had our limit of 15 trout. All real nice fish 14” to about 17”. One even had a tag in it. We took all the fish to the campground store where they took our picture and we turned in the tag to find out it was good for a free ice cream. They told us there are lots of tagged fish. Some tags are for an ice cream, $5. credit at the store and a couple fish have $100 tags in them. The next morning my son Dave joined us and we returned to our secret spot. We had our limit of 20 fish in about 1 hour again. One fish was about 3 ½ lbs. All nice trout. Two more tags. We ran into another friend, Wade from Petaluma who was fishing from his ski boat. Wade was trolling and trolled the main channel where he caught and released several fish. Wade kept two large fish, one about 4lbs and one about 6 lbs. We located a great group campsite that would be perfect for a club outing. In group site A there is room for about 8 motorhome or fifth wheel units all with full hookups. There is room for camping in the center area. Walking distance to the lake. There is no speed limit on the lake and they allow water sports (skiing) in the middle of the lake. All coves are blocked off as 5mph. Loud boats and jet skis are not allowed. Plus we were able to book our cabin and motor home site only a couple weeks before the trip. Great trip on a nice clean lake with clean facilities. |
