Duck Hunt Opener
By Darold Givens

Our opener this year was good on the Laughing Mallard Duck Club. Owners
Ken Bertelsen, Jim Danse and myself along with shooters, Don Woods and
Eric Swanson had enough birds on Saturday to keep us entertained. Since
having water on duck clubs this season was a problem, we were fortunate to
be flooded in time for the opener. Most of our shooting was pass shooting.
On Saturday, there was enough birds to make it interesting.  I was able to
shoot two ducks with one shot and thankful that Don saw it happen. On
Sunday, Ken did the same thing and I observed that. Sunday shooting was
better, not more birds but better shooting. Ken and I both had limits. The
mallard count was down but Northern Shovelers (spoonies), gadwall, sprig
and teal were in abundance.

Since our club is in a protected zone for Speckeled Belly Geese, (white front
geese), we could not shoot them the first week. And of course, many geese
taunted us by flying by close enough to shoot. I am sure next week we will
not be able to get near them. Our club is near the Sacramento Refuge and I
heard limited shooting on the refuge. The weather was warm and the
mosquitoes were numerous but the season is here and I am enjoying the
moment.
