A Zone Deer Hunt
By John Parkin

The A zone general hunt was generally a poor season for most this year on
public lands. The lack of rain last winter, this years hot summer, and the late
rut all came into play with this particular herd of deer.  However those of you
that know the land and are able to scout throughout the year did get their
bucks this season.  Christopher Parkin and his friend Nick went out on a
Saturday morning to a glade near Indian Valley Res. that we have been
watching all year. They came back with two nice forked horns to finish out
their hunt.

The following Thursday after the kids were gone John Parkin invited Bob
Kruger up for a deer hunt to finish out the year  "We hadn't seen a deer all
morning"  On our way back from Indian Valley, John saw a decent buck to
harvest at about 250 yards out and got his first buck of the season.  Later,
on the last morning of the season he scored another buck to close things
out.

Here are 3 pictures showing how dry Indian Valley Res. was. Needless to say
this lake is not much of a fishery any more.  Yolo County created this lake
for agricultural purposes and with the lack of rain fall last year; they decided
they really needed the water for crops. These pictures don’t show much,
however, if the lake was even 50% full you would see plenty of water in
these pictures.
