| Laughing Mallard Duck Hunt By Rocky Ferraro Last year I had a great hunt up at the Laughing Mallard duck club. The weather was blue bird but there were a few birds flying. It was nice just being up there again. I went up on a Friday but had to return home for a family function on Saturday. Saturday evening I was going to leave home and head up for the Sunday morning hunt and my daughter asked if she could go. I got an OK from Darold, Ken and Steve and off we went. This was my daughters first duck hunting experience. I made sure she had plenty of warm clothes to wear but Darold helped a great deal with lending us his extra waders. She was treated like a queen up at the club. She had her own room and every thing. In the morning after some toast and coffee we got dressed and ready to out to the blinds. Elizabeth got in the truck and after a short ride she was taken to the blind by quad. We got all situated before first light and could hear ducks and geese all around. We hunted for most of the morning but they just weren’t flying that well. I had a great time just spending time with my daughter out in the blind. Later Darold took her for a tour of the club in the quad. We had breakfast and we then we left. I had drawn for some reservations at nearby refuges for the coming weeks and wanted to take a look at where I would be hunting. When we got to the first one, Llano Seco there were rafts of ducks and snow geese sitting in what you would call a closed zone. It was amazing to see all the birds flying and swimming but just within the closed zone. Later we also went to the Sutter Buttes Refuge and we saw quite a few birds there as well. All in all we had a great time and got to spend some quality time together; after all that’s what it’s all about isn’t it? |
