Lake Dell Valle Primer
By Rocky Ferraro

It’s Friday night, I was driving up North and I get a ring on my cell. It was Joe O’Brien
asking me if I wanted to do some fishing on Saturday. I had a choice paint the house and
do some yard work or go on a first class fishing trip; well what would you do? I went
fishing of course!
We planned to meet the following morning at a leisurely 6AM. As many of you know Lake
Del Valle is close by so there is really no rush to get there. It is truly a low pressure; take
it easy kind of relaxing place. This time of the year the temperatures are mild, the hills
are green and the spring turkeys are gobbling and did I mention the fish are shallow!
I loaded my gear in Joe’s truck and we were off. Minutes later we were there launching
the boat. As we left the dock Joe set up the poles for trolling and we were good to go. I
ended up driving Joe’s boat and monitoring his phenomenal new color fish finder while
Joe manned the poles.
Not too long after maybe 20 minutes we had a fish on. Joe said “you take it”. I got up to
the pole and started to real it in. I played it just right, not too hard and before you know it I
had a monster rainbow in the boat.

I can’t tell you what I used too catch it; it’s a secret. I can tell you I was trolling and used a
lure that looked like a little fish. We used a certain scent which is also secret. Sorry you’ll
have to ask Joe. Joe is a Kokanee fisherman and he has all sorts of technical
knowledge, tips, tricks and of course the latest gear. I can also tell you that the fish I’m
holding is 18 inches and that it’s real good smoked.
Joe brought in the next one but the clumsy rookie he was fishing with was not used to
the large net; the fish decided he wanted no part of him and waved bye. We kept trolling
and before you know it we had another fish on. I could see the fish with the fish finder
and then moments later we would get a strike. Joe caught another nice one and this
time I was ready with the net. In the net it went and on the boat. I was beginning to get
used to this. We caught 2 more which made 4 in the boat’s live well.
Later in the afternoon the bite was off and we decided to go back. We made a great haul
for just a few hours spent relaxing on the blue waters of Del Valle Lake.
