| Interview with Bill Miller By Rocky Ferraro It was a cold January evening and surprisingly the traffic was light on 101. I drove up to Bills home, rang the bell and received the usual warm greeting. This was no ordinary evening; it was our monthly FCRG board meeting. “Come on in, sit down” he said. I sat down to dinner with the rest of the board Darold, Joe L, Bill S, Dan S and Bill Miller. All that was missing was Jim with his extraordinary sense of humor and smile. Of course Bill offered to make me one of his fantastic Manhattans and I eagerly accept, you all may not know this but Manhattans are my favorite drink! As time progressed I asked Bill how his duck hunt went at the Laughing Mallard Duck Club. He began to describe the day, great duck hunting weather, cold rainy and windy. Question: Bill what was it like on Friday? Answer: Well, (pause) it was pretty windy and the birds were flying in pretty good. Question: How quick did you get your limit? Answer: It didn’t take long; we had our birds and went in for a gourmet lunch. Then Darold chimed in: I was a gentleman and only shot after Bill had his 3 shots off! Later on I find out that that Friday was so windy, power line poles had fallen all over the area. Baron, Darold’s dog had to be rescued from across the pond back into the blind. I would estimate the winds at gale force!! Bill stayed and hunted the next day as well. His son Joe and Joe’s buddy Dave came up as well and hunted Saturday. Question: Bill how was the hunt on Saturday? Answer: Well, we hunted the morning, me with my son in one blind and Darold with Dave in the other. We got a few birds in the morning and we decided to head in for breakfast/lunch. Then Darold again: Dave and I saw a couple of mallards with something shiny on their feet, jewelry! We got them both a hen and a drake. I come to find out later from Darold that these birds were banded from two different locations and at different years. Question: Bill did you shoot the afternoon? Answer: We went back to check up on the kids. Answer From Darold: I told them there was no rush but they wanted to stay out there the whole day. By the time we got back they had gotten their limits. We all had a great time and the boy’s were real happy they had such a great hunt. Answer From Bill: All in all we had a great time and five star hospitality at the Laughing Mallard. |
