A Predator Hunt with Joe Miller
By Rocky Ferraro

This is a type of hunting that I have never done before. I’ve had a call for years now that I
blow once in a while. It’s got a God offal blood curdling sound of something; I guess a
rabbit, screaming for dear life. I was pig and coyote hunting with Joe Miller, Bill Miller’s
son. We had been looking at pig tracks for most of the day while walking and driving on
the property. The property is a vast array of landscapes. Some of it rolling hills dotted with
huge oak trees and some of sweeping prairie. Once in a while you run into an oasis
lined with trees.

We jumped a deer or 2 along the trails; some bucks and some does. We go back to
camp and plan our evening hunt. Joe suggests an area to go and try. As we sit glassing
one of the hills, clouds float over and decide to cool us down from the day’s hot sun. We
hear the crackle of a fire arm off in the distance. One hunter has shot a coyote; he is
tracking the coyote after the shot. We pack up and change location to another hill. While
sitting and glassing the hills and as the sun is setting Joe spots a Bobcat about 300
yards away. He takes out his predator call and blows the agonizing sound. We sit and
wait all of a sudden about 20 yards away a coyote is heading for the last location of the
wounded animals sound. We spot the coyote and Joe like a bolt of lightening reacts. The
crackle of the firearm like thunder goes off and the coyote is down.
